A LINKING RING IDEA The
secrets of the 'Hindoo Wands' (with bamboo and string) are very well known
nowadays. In it two pieces of bamboo are introduced. From one of these a
length of string is drawn and allowed to hang down. From other piece of
bamboo, string is similarly drawn. As the latter length of string is drawn
from the second piece of bamboo, so the former length of string is
withdrawn into the first piece of bamboo, the effect being that one length
of string (though invisible in the middle) is similarly being pulled
backward and forward through the two separate pieces of bamboo about 15
inches long. Each is hollow throughout the length, open at the bottom but
closed at the top being cut just above a joint in the wood. About an inch
from the top of each a small hole is bored, through which passes a
string. It has got a tassel or bead at the outer end and cylindrical
leaden or iron weight in the inner end. Thanks to these leaden weights,
the strings are automatically withdrawn when the bamboo is held in
vertical position. The Hindoo Bow Trick is an improvement or adaptation of this time old trick. A big bow is to be made of hollow tube. It may be of tin, brass, or any other metal as fancy takes and should be so colored outside that it looks like wood. This bow is semi-circular in shape (see the diagram) and has two small holes at each end with a margin of one inch. Two pieces of strings are passed as in the case of Hindoo Wands. The strings each have a leaden weight at one end, which can freely pass through the bow, and small knob at the other end instead of bead or tassel. This knob should be such that it can be passed inside the eyelids and kept there after having the eyelids closed. Most of us have seen the feat of weight lifting with eyelids; the knob is similar to those used in that trick. The rest is very easy. The magician has two bows looking exactly alike from outside. One is made of wood or bamboo with an faked string fitted in the same. The other is the one mentioned above. The magician with some excuse to the audience goes behind the screen and exchanges the examined bow with the prepared one and passes the two knobs in his two eyes. The sight is very horrible (see diagram). It appears that the whole length of the string has passed through the two eyes of the magician. To enhance the effect further he moves his bow now to the left, next to the right and the string passes through the eyes in a most miraculous way. Many of the spectators are heard to scream and shout at the horrible sight. The secret is very simple-the leaden weights will do everything automatically. It is a practical effect-to do is to bewilder. I have given the secret to a native Indian magician. He does it so successfully that I even sometimes think how marveling the feat is. You too will surely like it. The secrets of the 'Hindoo Wands' (with bamboo and string) are very well known nowadays. In it two pieces of bamboo are introduced.
